4 Tips for Safe Trick-Or-Treating

Halloween is just a day away! As you get your candy bowls ready and put the finishing touches on your child’s costume, it’s also a good time to brush up on trick-or-treating safety. If your little one will be trick-or-treating, here are four tips to ensure they have a fun and safe holiday.

1. Make sure your little one’s costume is safe.

When picking out a Halloween costume, the last thing on your little one’s mind is how safe the costume is. If you can get a word in edgewise, opt for costumes that are brightly colored so your child will be easily visible. If your child insists on a darker costume, consider purchasing reflective tape to put on the front, back and sides of their outfit.

2. Trick-or-treat in safe areas.

Trick-or-treat in safe areas you are familiar with and never let your child go inside someone’s home to retrieve candy.

3. Don’t run from house to house.

This one can be tough for kids who are eager to keep trick-or-treating, but try to keep your little one from running house to house. Make sure your child always looks both ways before crossing the street, at crosswalks and at intersections.

4. Check your child’s candy before he or she eats it.

You never really know what may find its way into your child’s candy sack, so it’s always best to be extra cautious. Sort through your child’s candy for anything that isn’t factory-wrapped. Any homemade treats should be given extra caution.
