What Is an Evaporator Coil?

We’re going to assume that learning the various parts within your air conditioning system isn’t exactly at the top of your to-do list, right? While you may think AC anatomy is drab, understanding the different components of your air conditioning system can help you diagnose and repair issues when they occur and save you money in the long run! Take for example, the evaporator coil. This tiny component of your air conditioning system has a big job to do. Learn more about evaporator coils, here.

Anatomy of an Evaporator Coil

On a hot Florida day, you air conditioner will automatically kick on to cool your home. As your home is cooling, the air conditioner sends chilled refrigerant to an indoor coil. A series of small metal tubes, this indoor coil contains the evaporator coil. The chilled refrigerant is sent inside of the coils and a motor is prompted to turn on. This will start the process of pulling warm air out of the home and into the return air duct. The evaporator coil ultimately works to help absorb this heat and aid in the chilling process.

Evaporator Coil Repair

As with any investment for your home, your air conditioning system is bound to run into issues and require repairs from time to time. The evaporator coil is susceptible to issues that can result in your air conditioner being less efficient. If you are experiencing any issues with the evaporator coil in your AC, these may be the culprits.

Ice: Evaporator coils can freeze and cause issues within your air conditioning system. If you notice the evaporator coil has frozen, it’s likely a sign that the refrigerant levels have dipped too low or there is something impeding the air from flowing. It may be the result of a clogged filter, faulty fan motor or another issue, so it is best to have a professional inspect your air conditioning system right away.

Dander, Dirt, Dust: All of the conditioned air in your home will pass through the evaporator coil at one point. During the air’s journey, it can pick up dander, dirt, dust and the like, which can cause the particles to become trapped in the evaporator coil, causing it to malfunction. Simply cleaning the evaporator coils should remedy this issue.
