Do I Need to Hurricane Proof My HVAC System?

We may live in the Sunshine State, but that doesn’t mean we don’t get our fair share of inclement weather. This especially rings true during hurricane season. But while most of us prepare our homes before a major storm, we tend to forget about our air conditioning systems. Considering your air conditioning system is one of the biggest investments you’ll make for your home, it’s important to take some precautionary measures if a hurricane is approaching. Learn how you can hurricane proof your HVAC system, here.

How to Prepare Your HVAC System Before a Hurricane

Protecting your HVAC system is as easy as following these three tips below. While you can follow these tips, it never hurts to be too prepared, which is why we also recommend investing in a generator in the case the electricity is out for an extended period of time.

Clear Debris: Before a hurricane, be sure to clear any debris around the outdoor component of your HVAC system. Hurricanes produce high winds, which will blow around anything in its path. This means that any patio furniture, tools, fallen tree branches and toys laying around could strike your HVAC system.

Protect the Condenser: During a hurricane, the condenser is the most at-risk component of your HVAC system. Before a hurricane, you can secure the condenser by checking that it is leveled with the ground. You can also cover the condenser with a tarp for the duration of the storm, but only if the system is powered off. Make sure that water does not seep through the tarp as this could lead to rust.

Schedule a Maintenance Checkup: Routine maintenance checkups help to keep your HVAC system functioning as efficiently as possible. While you should already be scheduling at least two maintenance checkups per year, it is a good idea to schedule one before a large storm too. A hurricane can put a lot of stress of your HVAC system, so you’ll want to ensure it’s functioning at optimal levels.
