Prepare Your AC for the Florida Winter

Winter is a relative term in Florida, as the state’s winter is often warmer than summer in many parts of the U.S. However, there is still a pronounced change in weather during the winter months in the Sunshine State, and there are some things you should do to prepare your air conditioner for that change.

Change the Air Filter

Though you likely will be using your air conditioner less during the winter, it’s still a good idea to change out the air filter. The filter is likely to be dirty after heavy use during the summer and fall. Not only will a new air filter lead to cleaner air circulating in your home, it also will allow your air conditioner to operate more efficiently.

Clean Your Condenser Unit

The part of your air conditioner that sits outside, called the condenser unit, can often build up dirt and debris which can reduce your AC’s efficiency and make it more likely to break down. That’s why it is important to clean it by thoroughly hosing it down with a garden hose. Late fall or early winter is a good time to do this, because the unit has likely gotten very dirty during Florida’s rainy months.

Have Your Unit Serviced

It’s a good idea to have your air conditioner serviced at least once a year by a certified HVAC technician, and right before winter is a good time to do this. For one thing, your AC has just gone through the six or seven months when it gets its heaviest use and likely is in need of a good tuneup. Another reason to do service prior to winter is that HVAC companies are likely to be less busy, because most people seek service for their air conditioners in the spring and summer.
