Your AC is supposed to blow cool, clean air. When it starts smelling off, that’s usually a signal something needs attention. Here are the most common smells and what they typically point to.
Musty or Moldy
A musty, earthy smell often points to mold or mildew growing in the system — usually in the drain pan or on the evaporator coil. In our humid climate, this is more common than you’d think. It’s worth addressing, since mold can affect indoor air quality.
Electrical or Burning
A sharp, electrical, or burning smell can indicate a wiring or motor issue. This one’s worth taking seriously — if you smell it, it’s a good idea to turn the system off and get it looked at.
Rotten Eggs
A sulfur or rotten-egg smell is usually not from the AC at all — it’s a sign of a gas leak somewhere in the home. If you smell this, leave the home and call your gas utility. It’s not an HVAC call, but it’s important to know the difference.
Dusty or “Burnt Dust”
A brief dusty smell when you first turn the system on after a long off-season is usually just dust burning off the coil. It’s typically harmless and clears quickly.
The Bottom Line
Most of these smells are a heads-up, not an emergency — except the electrical and gas ones, which deserve prompt attention. If your AC is smelling off and you’re not sure what it means, we’re happy to take a look. Don’t Roast, Call Seacoast.
