Why You Should Replace Your Air Filter Regularly

Once a month. That’s the recommended frequency with which you should change your air filter. While it may sound excessive to the average homeowner, there’s good reason for the guideline… But you don’t have to take our word for it. Read on to learn why regularly replacing your air filter is so important.

The Purpose of Air Filters

Air filters have two primary purposes. The first purpose is to protect the inside of your air conditioner from airborne particles, such as dust and pet dander. If allowed inside your air handler, these particles can build up on your evaporator coil, slowing your system’s overall efficiency.

An air filter’s secondary purpose is to keep your indoor air clean. If too much dust, dirt and other potentially harmful particles pile up on your filter, it will become less efficient at stopping these particles from entering your air conditioner. If debris is allowed to build up on the evaporator coil, which is moist from condensation, it could become a breeding ground for bacteria. And that’s bad news for your home’s indoor air quality.

The Benefits of Regularly Changing Your Filter

In order for an air filter to efficiently perform its duties, it must be replaced when it becomes full of dust, dirt, pet hair and other particles. Here are just a few of the perks of beginning each month with a fresh filter.

It improves your air quality. As mentioned, protecting the quality of air in your home is one of the main jobs an air filter has. If anyone in your family has allergies or other respiratory issues, poor indoor air quality could make them worse. Prolonged exposure to unhealthy air could even cause respiratory issues to develop. By changing your filter regularly, you can help keep your family healthier and safer.

It prolongs the life of your AC. When harmful particles are allowed to build up on the expensive equipment inside your air conditioner, your system’s efficiency is compromised. Each part has to work a little harder to deliver cool air throughout your home, causing more wear than necessary. This may cause parts of your system to give out, calling for costly repairs and replacements.

It lowers your energy bill. When your air filter is clean, your air conditioner needs less energy to keep your home cool. And less energy consumption means a lower energy bill!
