What is a Condenser Coil?

Your air conditioner is made up of a complex system of parts that work together to produce air at a desirable temperature. The piece of equipment responsible for evaporating cool liquid into the gas that is pushed through your home’s ventilation system is called a condenser coil. Without this important piece, the air circulating through your home would never reach the temperature set on the thermostat!

Knowing how the various parts of your air conditioner work can help you get the most efficient use from your system and prevent complications from occurring in the future. Learn more about how a condenser coil works to keep you comfortable in your home.

How a Condenser Coil Works

A condenser coil is a heat exchanger, which means its main purpose is to transfer heat between two mediums. Within an HVAC system, this snake-like spiral coil is responsible for the process of transferring heat or cooled air. To change the temperature of the air going into your home, an air conditioner circulates water, steam or chemical refrigerant that interacts with the air, pressurizing it into a liquid. When this liquid enters the condenser unit and runs over the coil, it changes back into a gas. The gas is then compressed, cooled and sent through your home’s ventilation system. This process repeats itself until the air has reached your desired temperature all throughout your home.

How to Detect Condenser Coil Problems

Unlike some of the other parts of your air conditioner, such as the air filter, condenser coils are generally self-maintaining and do not require frequent cleaning or replacement. However, like any appliance in your home, wear over time may cause it to malfunction, compromising the efficiency of your entire air conditioning system.

If you find the air coming out of your vents to be warmer than what the thermostat is set at, your condenser coil may be the culprit. Check the refrigerant level to see if there’s enough there. If there is, but the air is still not cool enough, it may be time to replace your condenser coil.

It’s best to hire a professional air conditioning technician to install a new condenser coil to ensure the replacement is the right fit for your system and that no damage occurs.
