How Long Will My Air Conditioner Last?

Your air conditioning system is a vital component of your home, responsible for creating a comfortable environment, maintaining good indoor air quality and protecting your valuables from heat and humidity. With all your AC does for you and how big of an investment it was, you of course want to it to last you a long time. So, just how long does your average AC last?

When properly maintained and taken care of, your air conditioner should last around 10 to 15 years. Here’s what you can do to keep your AC running smoothly and efficiently for as long as possible:

Keep Your Equipment Clean

For the most part, the only piece of AC equipment you interact with regularly is the thermostat. However, while the rest of your system is largely out of sight and out of mind, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t need some attention. The indoor components of your AC, including your air handler and your evaporator coils, should be kept clean and free of the dust, dirt and bacteria that can build up on them. You should also keep your outdoor condenser unit free of debris, such as leaves and twigs that may get lodged inside, while keeping the surrounding area clear of stray objects and vegetation. When your AC equipment is kept clean, your system will run more efficiently and you equipment will last longer.

Change the Filter Frequently

Changing your filter regularly is the simplest way to keep your AC running strong year after year. When your AC filter becomes too clogged with particles, the airflow in your home is restricted. This can put a strain on your AC equipment and lead to damage and wear. As a guideline, you should change your filter every month, especially during heavy heating and cooling seasons. During more moderate seasons, you may be able to change your filter less frequently. However, if you have a lot of foot traffic in your home or any pets that shed, monthly changes are a good idea.

Schedule Regular Preventative Maintenance

The best way to prolong the lifespan of your air conditioner is by getting regular preventive maintenance from an AC professional. When a professional technician performs maintenance on your system, they make sure everything is running at peak performance and can even catch minor issues before they spiral into costly breakdowns. Plus, preventative maintenance can help lower your energy bills and improve your indoor air quality!
