Why Does My AC Smell Like It’s Burning?

A burning smell coming from your AC unit can be an alarming discovery, and it is something that will require some extra attention to diagnose. While some causes of this smell are relatively harmless, others may require immediate attention. Below are some of the possible causes of a burning smell and what steps you can take to fix the issue.

A Dirty System

If your AC unit or heater smells like it’s burning when you initially turn it on after several weeks or months of inactivity, there is a chance that the burning smell is from dust and other debris burning off of the components. This is typically a short-lived issue, and the smell should quickly go away. However, it may be a sign that your system would benefit from a tune-up or cleaning from an HVAC technician.

A Broken Blower Motor

If the smell continues, it may be stemming from a damaged blower motor. The motor may have gone out, or it may be about to go out. Both of these issues require a replacement part to be installed, and your HVAC technician will be able to diagnose the problem and make the repair for you if this is the cause of the problem.

An HVAC or Central Heating Fire

Fires stemming from an HVAC unit are rare, but they can happen from time to time. This is an urgent issue that can result in considerable property damage and loss of life, so you should inspect the HVAC unit when you smell smoke to ensure that it has not caught on fire. If there is a fire, you should immediately call for emergency help. In other instances, you can minimize the risk of an HVAC fire by scheduling preventative maintenance service with your technician. An HVAC specialist can inspect all of the components, wires and other parts to ensure that they are in proper working order.
